Three Paddling Spots in Banff and Yoho National Parks

If you're like me, you have a hard time driving through the Canadian Rockies and not thinking about paddling on all the gorgeous lakes! There are many great opportunities to kayak, canoe and SUP throughout Banff and Yoho National Parks. Here are four spots I have enjoyed! Please note: Alberta has a policy where all watercraft must be cleaned and thoroughly dried for 48 hours before being used in another body of water. This is to prevent the spread of invasive species. May locations even have washing stations and there is documentation required. It's an easy process, but an important one to care for Canada's beautiful bodies of water.

1. Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park

Emerald Lake is located about an hour from Banff and one of my favorite paddles and drives. To get to Emerald Lake, you actually pass Lake Louise and enter Yoho National Park in British Columbia.

Emerald Lake is tucked away between mountains and is absolutely breathtaking. There is a small parking lot as well as some parking on the side of the road. Restrooms are available and there are many hikes which are accessible from the lake.

You can rent a canoe, or you can you bring your own kayak, SUP or canoe and launch at the lake.

No matter what you do, add Emerald Lake to your paddle list!

2. Two Jack Lake, Banff National Park

Paddling on Two Jack Lake is without a doubt one of the most beautiful paddles I have ever done. Two Jack Lake is located within Banff National Park and can be easily accessed just off Highway 1.

I rented an inflatable SUP from Bow Valley SUP & Surf and arrived at Two Jack Lake early in the morning. I inflated my SUP (which was super easy thanks to the great instruction from the Bow Valley SUP & Surf team!). When I arrived, there weren't too many others out yet other than a few people who were camping. The lake was glassy and clear. It was so quiet I could hear the campers talking at sites across the lake and every angle was absolutely stunning!

I paddled for a couple hours and by the time I finished, there were many more people starting to gather at the beautiful lake. There is a cleaning/inspection station near the lake entrance.

3. Bow River, Banff Town

You can rent canoes and kayaks from The Banff Canoe Club which is located right within the town of Banff. The friendly team provides instruction, and you have the option of choosing a canoe or kayak based on your skill level and group size. Group paddles are even offered.

The views were absolutely stunning and the current was manageable.

Paddling with others and wearing a life jacket is always recommended. Don't forget to check the weather before you go to make sure you dress appropriately as the weather can quickly change in the mountains.

Views from the Bow River.

There are many wonderful places to paddle in Banff and Yoho National Parks and I can't wait to paddle more of them!
